The 7 Types of Surfers You'll Meet in Every Lineup

Every surf break has its own personality.

Some lineups are quiet and respectful. Others feel like organized chaos. But no matter where you paddle out, you'll probably recognize a few familiar faces.

Here are seven characters you'll almost always find in the water.

1. The Dawn Patrol Chicken

"Coffee first. Waves second."

He's been awake since before sunrise. While most people are still asleep, he's already checking the forecast with a mug of coffee in one hand and a surfboard in the other.

He's not chasing likes or crowds. He just loves those quiet mornings when the ocean belongs to whoever was willing to wake up early.

You'll usually find him paddling out with a smile, sharing waves, and heading to work with salty hair and a better attitude than everyone else.

Strengths

  • Respects the lineup
  • Loves uncrowded waves
  • Knows consistency beats perfection

2. The Grom

"Every wave is the best wave ever."

The grom has unlimited energy.

He's paddling for everything, talking to everyone, and celebrating every ride like he just won a world title.

Sometimes he'll accidentally get in your way. Sometimes he'll wipe out spectacularly.

But nobody reminds us why we started surfing better than the grom.

His excitement is contagious.

Strengths

  • Fearless
  • Always improving
  • Loves surfing more than anyone

3. The Local Gorilla

"Respect goes a long way."

The gorilla has surfed this break for years.

He knows every reef, every tide, every current, and every face in the lineup.

To outsiders he might look intimidating, but more often than not he's simply protecting the culture and expecting respect.

Show good etiquette, wait your turn, and don't paddle around everyone.

You'll usually earn a nod—and maybe even a few good waves.

Strengths

  • Deep knowledge of the break
  • Protects surf culture
  • Commands respect without saying much

4. The Core Lord

"Surfing isn't something I do. It's who I am."

Sun-bleached hair.

Old board held together with repairs.

Faded boardshorts.

Shark bites? Maybe.

This surfer has been doing the same thing for decades and probably owns equipment older than some people in the lineup.

He isn't interested in trends.

He's just here because surfing is part of his life.

Strengths

  • Endless experience
  • Doesn't care what anyone thinks
  • Lives and breathes surfing

5. The Longboard Girl

"Style over speed."

While everyone else is trying to throw spray, she's walking to the nose with effortless style.

She reminds everyone that surfing doesn't always have to be aggressive.

Grace, flow, and wave selection often beat power.

She's usually one of the smoothest surfers in the lineup.

Strengths

  • Beautiful style
  • Patient wave selection
  • Makes difficult surfing look effortless

6. The Hippie

"Good vibes only."

You'll probably hear him before you see him.

He knows everyone's name, shares waves freely, and somehow always has a story about the perfect surf trip from twenty years ago.

He believes surfing should bring people together.

Sometimes he's right.

Strengths

  • Friendly
  • Positive
  • Keeps the lineup relaxed

7. The Donkey (The Kook)

"We've all been there."

The donkey means well.

He's just... a little lost.

His leash is wrapped around everything.

Wax is on backwards.

He's sitting in the wrong spot.

He paddles for waves he can't catch and misses the ones he should.

Every experienced surfer was once the donkey.

That's why the best surfers remember to offer advice instead of criticism.

Everyone starts somewhere.

Strengths

  • Eager to learn
  • Full of enthusiasm
  • Future surfer in the making

Every Lineup Needs Every Character

Surfing wouldn't be the same without all of them.

The early risers.

The kids.

The locals.

The old souls.

The stylish longboarders.

The free spirits.

Even the beginners trying to figure it all out.

Every lineup tells a different story, but it's the people—not just the waves—that make surfing unforgettable.

That's what inspired The Lineup Collection.

Every design in this collection pays tribute to one of the personalities you'll find in almost every lineup. Some will remind you of your best friend. Some will remind you of the surfer you hope to become. And if we're being honest, most of us have been the Donkey at least once.

At Sole Surf Company, we believe surfing has never been about trophies, followers, or who's surfing the best. It's about the people who paddle out because they love being in the ocean.

The Lineup Collection was created to celebrate those people.
