The Meaning Behind Our Logo: A Tribute to Hawaiʻi

Founded in Hawaiʻi in 2024, Sole Surf Company creates apparel and surf gear for everyday surfers—people who paddle out for the pure love of the ocean, not for trophies, followers, or sponsorships.

Our logo honors where Sole Surf Company began, who we make our products for, and our connection to Hawaiʻi through four central elements.

• The ʻIwa Birds: Gliding high overhead, the native ʻiwa, or great frigatebird, represents freedom—the freedom to follow what calls you and make time for what matters. The birds also acknowledge Hawaiʻi’s past, present, and future, connecting generations through their enduring presence above the islands and ocean.

• The Rising Sun: Rising behind the mountains, the dawn sun honors the early-morning dawn-patrol community. It represents the quiet dedication of workers, students, parents, and other everyday surfers who find time for a session before their daily responsibilities begin—no cameras, no recognition, just the day’s first light.

• The Two Mountains: The twin peaks were inspired by the volcanic landscapes that shaped the Hawaiian Islands. Oʻahu was formed primarily by the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau volcanoes, while Maui is shaped by the West Maui Mountains and Haleakalā. The mountains anchor the logo and represent the rugged landscape that forms the backdrop to so much of life and surfing in Hawaiʻi.

• The Barreling Wave: At the center of the logo is one of surfing’s most unforgettable experiences: the barrel. It represents the brief, powerful feeling of being completely present inside a wave. It also reminds us that the heart of surfing belongs to the everyday surfing community—not only professionals and sponsored athletes.

Duke Kahanamoku helped introduce surfing to people around the world, sharing something deeply connected to Hawaiʻi far beyond the islands. Sole Surf Company does not claim Duke’s legacy as its own, but we are inspired by the open spirit with which he shared surfing.
