The Rule of Three: Why Great Surf Sessions Are So Rare

If you've ever worked in construction, you've probably heard this saying:

You can only have two of these three things:

  • Good
  • Cheap
  • Fast

Need it fast and cheap? The work probably won't be good.

Need it good and fast? It probably won't be cheap.

Need it cheap and good? It probably won't be fast.

Rarely do you get all three.

After years of surfing, I've realized the ocean has its own version of this rule.

Every Surf Session Is a Trade-Off

As surfers, there are three things we all hope for before paddling out:

  • Good swell
  • Light, clean winds
  • No crowds

The problem is, you usually only get two.

Maybe the swell is pumping and the wind is offshore, but the parking lot is overflowing and the crowd is waiting.

Maybe you find an empty lineup with beautiful glassy conditions, but the swell never showed up.

Or maybe there's a solid swell and hardly anyone out, but the onshore wind has turned every wave into a bumpy mess.

That's just the way it is.

The Perfect Session Is Rare

Every once in a while, though, something special happens.

The swell fills in.

The wind stays light.

The crowds never arrive.

You paddle out and can't believe your luck. Every wave seems to come to you, the ocean feels alive, and for a few hours everything else in the world fades away.

Those sessions don't happen often.

When they do, don't spend your time wishing the waves were another foot bigger or that they were peeling just a little longer. Don't rush through it thinking about work or what you have to do later that day.

Stay out a little longer.

Watch the sunrise.

Take a moment to appreciate where you are.

Because another session like that may not come around for weeks, months, or even longer.

Why We Made the Great Session Tee

That simple idea is what inspired our Great Session Tee.

It's a reminder that a truly great surf session isn't always about surfing the biggest waves. Sometimes it's about those rare mornings when everything comes together—good swell, light winds, and an uncrowded lineup.

Those are the sessions you'll remember years from now.

If you're lucky enough to get one, soak it in.

They don't come around very often.
